Now we can get into the meat of making profit in RE. You now know the terminology used in the industry, the way transactions work, how to value property, and where to look for property. You’ve probably seen those late-night commercials on real estate investment that talk about different ways to buy and handle property; I call them the “Midnight Infomercials.” I will be using them as examples, so this is a good time to talk about what they teach and what they fail to teach.

Those midnight infomercials don’t give you any new or exciting methods of doing business, just old ways looked at from different angles with more unrealistic hype than information. In the infomercials, person after person tells you how much money they made, supposedly using the program they want you to buy. But there’s no independent verification, and even if the people speaking really did make some money, there’s no way to verify that the program had anything to do with it. Sometimes the guy bragging about his profits is akin to the example of the guy who bought the ex-husband’s classic car for $100: it may really happen, but not more than once a century. It would be silly to buy a book about how to stand on corners waiting for vengeful ex-wives in expensive cars, but that’s more or less what these infomercials are. They can’t tell you what their “plans” really are because then there would be no reason to buy their programs. Most of those plans can be explained in a few sentences, but they sell you books, videos and supposed contracts which “can be used anywhere.” All they’ve shown you by the end is people standing in front of nice homes and fast cars towing faster boats, throwing money in the air, and all you have learned is that some people say they made money. Then the announcer either asks you to buy hundreds of dollars worth of books or to attend a free or cheap seminar that will tell you to spend thousands of dollars on a different course. Naturally, this thousand-dollar course is one that will finally tell you the big money-making secret.
